Traditional metal braces are not an appealing option for every patient who needs his or her teeth straightened since they are easily seen by others; Invisalign offers a technology which eliminates the awkwardness of regular braces, with a unique and comfortable transparent straightening system. Patients who are interested in learning more and finding out if its for them can consult a Denton dentist.

This innovative system involves wearing a set of dental aligners which are made out of clear, polyurethane plastic. Their use produces the same results that metal braces do, and they function in the same manner by guiding teeth into their proper positions. Specifically custom-built for each patient, each aligner in the series shifts the teeth one step closer to their final position.

The dentist will assess the condition of the patients mouth and determine if this approach is appropriate. He or she will take several x-ray images, and will also cast an impression of the teeth that will be used to design a 3-D computerized model of the mouth from which the strategy for correcting the bite and position of the teeth can be planned. A set of aligners will be built according to these specifications.

The patient must commit to consistently wearing the aligner for at least 20 to 22 hours each day in order for it to have its desired effect. A new aligner will be worn approximately every two weeks. Patients will attend periodic check-ups to monitor their progress.

Another good quality of these appliances is that they do not place restrictions on ones diet, as they are simply removed before eating and drinking. Cleaning them is easy too, as they just need to be brushed regularly like teeth do. Since they are taken out for oral hygiene, one can also clean and floss teeth more easily than with braces.

The length of time the patient will need to wear the aligners for varies between 9 to 18 months, but for most it takes about one year. Some patients will not be eligible for this approach to orthodontic straightening and may be better off with metal braces. Consulting a Denton dentist is the best choice to make sure this choice is appropriate.
